What is a Quantile Measure?

Jaclyn Otto

A Quantile measure is a framework for mathematics designed to help identify skills and concepts students are ready to learn and to help track student growth using one scale score across grade levels.

Quantile measures were created by the same group (MetaMetrics) that developed the Lexile Framework for Reading and the Lexile Framework for Writing, both widely used to gauge student progress and the complexity and suitability of materials.

Much like Lexile measures, Quantile measures help teachers understand the skills and concepts students are ready to learn. They range from below 0Q to above 1400Q (kindergarten-high school). Ideally, students should practice skills and concepts of 50Q above and below their Quantile measure with an expectation that they reach 1350Q by the end of their high school career to meet the math demands of most college courses and careers.

Quantile Measures are widely accepted as universal, objective metrics for monitoring and predicting growth. While Alef Pathways provides a historical growth report using each diagnostic as a data point, you can also use this Quantile Growth Planner.

Quantile Skill and Concept (QSC) combines the Quantile measure and the skill or concept. It gives teachers a gauge of how complex one skill is compared to others. As teachers, we know that math skills build on one another, and it's important for students to grasp the "foundation" of a concept before moving on more difficult understandings.

Teachers can use the Quantile Math Skills Database to find QSC's using their state standards.  This free resource allows teachers to target a specific standard, match it with a goal and find the QSC ID, description of the QSC, the matching Quantile measure and the strand. Clicking on the QSC will provide the Knowledge Cluster, which identifies the prerequisite skills, supporting skills and impending skills for student success.

Luckily, Alef Pathways takes the guess work out of providing the next "just right" skills for student success.  After the first diagnostic has been completed, students are placed on their Pathway and given exactly what they need, at exactly the right time.  The diagnostic has already identified the prerequisite skills students need to meet their grade-level standards, and provides supporting skills to help them get there, and beyond!
