 Education Specialist (Literacy)

Location: Rochester, NY


Our client partners with District officials to provide professional development, coaching, and high quality instructional resources to all K-5 teachers to improve students' literacy.   Over 1,000 teachers are hired and/or assigned to teach a different grade level every year, resulting in the need for technical training, development, and support in using the core instructional resources in English Language Arts (ELA). Education Specialists focus specifically on literacy resources and are embedded within the District to support elementary schools based on needs and requests made by the assistant superintendents, principals, and teachers. These Education Specialists meet quarterly with the Office of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment to monitor progress by analyzing teacher feedback from their training as well as the frequency and duration of support provided. To date our client's Education Specialists have provided 274 professional development sessions, 80 for mathematics and 194 for literacy, to over 1,880 teachers during the 2018-2019 school year. Teachers reported a 93% high satisfaction average on post professional development surveys.

This position is full time, (40/week) and requires minimal travel. The duration of work  All estimated local travel is within one hour of Rochester. 

Responsibilities include:
  • Plan for and deliver comprehensive job-embedded professional development for schools implementing our client’s literacy products
  • Facilitate planning meeting with school and district leadership that establishes our client’s partnership with the school and initiates the process of implementation
  • Facilitate face-to-face professional development for school leadership, faculty, and support staff, including:
    • Implementation of the Workshop Model of Instruction for reading and writing
    • Implementation of selected foundation units in writing, genre studies in reading
    • Principal and Leadership Team training in observing and analyzing the routines, rituals, and classroom practices 
    • Develop strategies for aligning classroom instruction to the State Standards and the Common Core State Standards, College and Career Readiness Competencies 
    • Specific, research-based strategies for teaching second language learners and students with disabilities
    • Strategies for developing students' academic language and college and career readiness competencies


  • Master's Degree or higher
  • Demonstrated success as a classroom teacher of Literacy/English language arts and at least five years of successful experience as a K-5 professional
  • At least 3 years of experience facilitating professional development to teachers, staff memebers
  • Strong collaboration and team building skills
  • Knowledge of standards-based reform, curriculum, instruction and assessment
  • Ability to plan strategically with and coach school leaders
  • Ability to coach classroom teachers
  • Ability to provide instructional support relating to effective teaching strategies for teachers across content areas
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of and the ability to function with various school and district organizational structures
  • Excellent ability to present content to large and small groups
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Skills in use of technology (how to spell out?)
