As students and curious-minded science folks we often ask the question “Is there life on other worlds?” We may have been following the many NASA space science missions that have explored the planets and some of their moons over the past several years which have allowed us to begin to seek answers to this ever-growing question. We often look at how unique life-forms can exist and thrive under extreme conditions in hostile environments here on Earth. So let’s journey to these other worlds and learn about the field of Astrobiology and our search for life on these "strange" worlds.

Have you ever looked at the night sky and marveled at the complexity of the universe? If you have, you are not alone. Astronomy is one of the oldest fields of science and deals with the study of celestial objects, space, and the universe. Join Dr. Nancy to explore our solar system and the relationship between the bodies within it. We will look at solar and lunar eclipses, as well as the role of gravity in our solar system in this three session course.

This journey will engage you in the wonders of our solar system (and beyond). We will take a tour of the planets and the variety of other objects that make up our region within the Milky Way galaxy that we call ‘home.’ As we explore and experience what we have discovered through NASA’s space missions, we will begin to appreciate and unlock some of the mysteries of our celestial neighbors. So let’s visit these other worlds and learn about our solar system (and beyond) as we forge forward to better our knowledge and understanding of these "extra-terrestrial" places.

What Is Science?
Grades: 5th-8th
Number of Sessions: 1   |   Total Cost: $25 US

We often think of scientists following the scientific method and conducting laboratory experiments, but that’s only part of the story. Some scientists do carry out experiments where they change one variable at a time (single variable testing) and measure the effects of that change to test a hypothesis, but other scientists must rely on careful observations to collect data. Join Dr. Nancy to explore what all scientists have in common and how the scientific community is shifting from thinking about a single scientific method to focusing on the eight science and engineering practices.
